FAQ

What is the minimum age or experience level needed to take a class?

No experience needed! We offer a range of classes that will either start with the basics or build on your prior experience, and help you achieve your educational goals.

AHA certification cards can only be issued to students age 13 and older.

Children age 5 and older are welcome in all non-certificate classes, but skills may be challenging for children younger than 9 years old.

I have no medical background or experience. Which class is best for me?

It depends on your educational goals!

To learn the very basics of providing life-saving CPR in the shortest time possible, check out one of our free Hands-Only CPR classes.

To learn CPR and AED basics, as well as how to help a child or infant, and how to relieve choking, sign up for CPR Anytime! or Family & Friends CPR.

To obtain or renew CPR certification, and learn CPR, CPR with breaths, AED use, choking relief, and [optional] first aid skills for both adults and children, sign up for a HeartSaver course.

I’m a healthcare professional who needs to obtain or renew CPR certification. Which class do I take?

You’ll need one of the American Heart Association courses, like Basic Life Support. Learn more here.

What’s the difference between HeartSaver CPR, and BLS?

Both provide certification. HeartSaver CPR/AED (with optional First Aid) is geared towards anyone with no prior experience in healthcare, but who needs a CPR card for work, school, or “just because”.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is for healthcare providers who are required to obtain or renew CPR certification.

How long is my certification valid for?

AHA certifications are valid for 2 years. For all non-certificate classes, we recommend practicing your skills at least once a year, and refreshing your knowledge at least every 2 years.

Do you accommodate special needs?

Of course! We want to engage, empower, and educate EVERYONE. Please just let us know if you need a physical or audio/visual accommodation, and we will do everything we can to meet your needs.

Does the BLS class include first aid?

BLS for Healthcare Providers does not include first aid, but we can add on a first aid class to anyone interested (certificate or non-certificate) at an additional cost.

If you’re a non-healthcare provider, check out our stand-alone HeartSaver First Aid class.

Does the ACLS or PALS class include BLS?

ACLS and PALS certifications include testing on BLS skills, but BLS certification can be accomplished during your ACLS/PALS class for an additional fee.

Is there any pre-course work?

There is no pre-course work for any in-person class. For blended-learning certificate classes, your pre-course work can be accomplished at your own pace before your scheduled class, and will be provided at the time of registration.

Is there a test to pass the class?

For non-certificate classes, there are no tests!

All certificate classes require hands-on, practical skills tests. BLS courses require a written test that can be administered either online before class (blended learning format), or at the end of an in-person class. Businesses/organizations who are organizing a HeartSaver course for their employees can choose whether to include a written test, but it is not required to obtain certification.

How do I pay my class registration fee?

We can securely process debit and credit cards, and also accept cash and Venmo.

We can invoice businesses and organizations who are arranging group classes.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations may be made more than 24 hours in advance for a full refund. Cancellations or reschedule requests made less than 24 hours before the start of the scheduled class will incur a fee.

Are your instructors certified?

INDY MedEd teaches to American Heart Association standards, and our instructors are certified to teach American Heart Association and/or American Red Cross curriculum.

While other companies might also utilize certified instructors, very few have the depth and breadth of knowledge, skills, and experience available to you through INDY MedEd.

There is no substitute for professional expertise and hands-on practice when you’re preparing for real-world emergencies.
